Why does this blog exist? Blame it on the ugly couch…

So I’ve been lurking around on my favorite blogs for about six months now and keep thinking – I have wicked cool stuff to share, too! Before and afters, mistakes, cool details, thrifty finds and generally things that make me haaaapppy – so why don’t I blog about it? See if the stuff I share will delight them as much as it delights me.

The girls at Centsational Girl and Thrifty Decor Chick and The Lettered Cottage had me at hello, but I just could take the leap until now. Why, you say?

Well…’cuz it looks like a lot of work and I’d have to come up with snappy fun entries on a DAILY basis. And I just don’t have time for that. And I’m just not that snappy.

But today I found a couch at my favorite Salvation Army store.

Not just a couch, but an ugly couch. A mid-century Danish modern green and orange tweed mess that I fell in love with at first sight. I bought that baby today and dragged it home in my minivan (that goodness for 15 year old sons) and now it is sitting in my unfinished family room and my family is NOT amused. What shall I do with it? It is sooo purteee – any thoughts?

Doesn’t she have the teeniest most dainty legs?

Look. At. Those. Lines. And the buttons across the back. And the cushions and upholstery are in PERFECT shape and the springs are just like new. …… does this picture make her look fat? I like the first photo better.

But look at this: she’s ready for her close-up:

And I can’t resist the risque photo:

I laid down on this thing for a full twenty minutes this afternoon and I swear I’ve never laid on anything so comfortable. I made my son lie on it and he leapt off it like it was on fire and stomped off convinced that his poor Mom has lost her mind.

I called my hubby to tell him how wonderful it was, how comfortable, how totally mid-century awesome it was. And it had cute little legs and NO back cushions that the doxie could sit on a squish down (that is another story entirely).

I told him it was “so totally Dick Van Dyke”. What I didn’t tell him was that it was upholstered in green and orange itchy wool tweed.

He came home and saw it and a look came across his face that I’ve seen MANY times before – sort of a “I-just-sucked-on-a-lemon” face mixed with a “I-think-I-just-stepped-in-dog-poop” face. He said on it for a second, tapped the cushions with the palm of his hands, then just got up and walked out of the room. When I caught up with him and asked him what he thought, he said that he thought that whatever I paid for it, I overpaid for it.

Le sigh.

So what do I do with it now? I’d love to hear some ideas.

Oh – and did I mention I don’t need a couch? That’s another story, too.

  1. You know, Maggie, I think it’s already served its purpose in inspiring your blog. Now, you can FreeCycle it. Everyone wins!

  2. No way! I love this couch! I love the green and orange! It’s amazing that it’s in such pristine shape.

If you haven’t read James Lilek’s “Interior Desecrations,” go out and buy it. Then J. will have a whole new perspective on what is ugly from that era.

  3. Girl, I don’t care what you do with that couch (although, I’m sure you’ll come up with something wonderful), just keep blogging! I love your sense of humor, & your general outlook on life – so glad I happened upon your blog (via Better After – I love Lindsay, too!).
